This portrait centers on the lynx’s watchful eyes and dense winter fur. Snow drifts through the frame as the forest fades behind it — a pause in motion, as the animal tracks movement beyond the edge of view. In Washington State, fewer than three dozen Canada lynx are estimated to remain, surviving at the southern edge of their range in fragmented, high-elevation forests.

The magestic lion’s eyes are sharply focused, while the mane dissolves into soft washes, capturing quiet authority and presence in a single moment. Across Africa, fewer than 20,000 mature lions remain, threatened by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching.
Lion (Panthera leo) — Presence
Perched a branch, this hawk holds a moment of quiet power — eyes alert, rust-colored plumage and broad wings conveying strength and focus. In Washington, about 30 breeding pairs remain, surviving in fragmented shrub-steppe and grassland habitats at the edge of their range.
Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) — Vigilance
A male, female, and juvenile feed on māmane blossoms. The adults’ bright red plumage contrasts with the juvenile’s mottled green‑yellow, capturing a moment of family life in Hawaiʻi’s forests. ʻIʻiwi persist mainly in high-elevation forests, threatened by habitat loss, invasive species, and avian malaria.
